Are you on the map?

We've been keeping tabs on all the cities where the BIKES vs CARS Facebook friends and Kickstarter backers come from. The above map (which you can click on for a better view) is a beautiful display of all the support we've gathered from around the world! We're still waiting on Antarctica to step up to the plate, but so happy to see that people from 6 different continents, dozens of countries and countless cities believe in what we're working on and want to help bring the BIKES vs CARS documentary to a global audience.

Are you a supporter, but don't see a mark on your city? Email [email protected] and we'll get you on there! Do you know people that live in places that are not yet marked on the map? Could you ask them to donate a dollar to this campaign? That's all it takes, one dollar, to get another mark on this map and to show that we are many - everywhere.

By the way, in honor of the global support, we now have a Portuguese and a Spanish subtitled version of our Kickstarter video. More languages to come soon!

Joe Berlinger's new love: The Bicycle.

Last week, two-time Academy Award-nominated and two-time Emmy and Peabody winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger visited the Nordisk Panorama Film Festival in Malmö, Sweden. He was invited by Fredrik Gertten, director of BIKES vs CARS, to the festival session called “My dinner with...” At the dinner, in front of an audience, they launched the BIKES vs CARS Kickstarter campaign. Before Joe could commit to pressing the launch button though, he had to first give the bike a try himself. Watch the video to see what he thought...

We're happy to have Joe along with us for the ride. You can join us too!

Why the VS in the title? Why highlight the conflict?

Aline Cavalcante says in the trailer: This is not a war, this is a city. We have to live together in peace.

spgb.jpgTraveling the world meeting bike activists, I know that she represents this movement well. This is not an anti-car movement, or even worse, a movement that hates people who drive cars. Bike activists ask for safety, separated bike lanes, better crossings, respect in traffic. It's all about city planning that cares about more than cars.

To me BIKES vs CARS is a David and Goliath theme. Where the bicycle is the David. Not only in the daily, uneven fight for space in traffic. For me it's quite clear now that the car model is no longer working. And the people who suffer most are the ones inside the cars. Gridlocks create frustrations and aggressions, not talking about all the extra costs of just sitting inside your car wasting fuel and time.

Kickstarter Campaign Launched!

We're having a great World Car Free Day here in Malmö, Sweden. And to top off the celebrations, we officially launched the BIKES vs CARS Kickstarter campaign today! At 16.45 Swedish time, in front of an audience at Fredrik Gertten's MY DINNER WITH Joe Berlinger, Joe pressed the GO button. Friends, we can now finally give you the link:

We want to make a big statement with this Kickstarter campaign: WE ARE MANY, around the world, that see the bike as a tool for change. If you'd like to help us spread that message, consider supporting us by donating to our campaign or sharing it with friends that you think would be interested. Tweet about it, share it on Facebook and make sure to use the #bikesvscars. We even have a pre-made tweet for you (although we know you're creative enough to come up with your own!):

The @bikes_vs_cars #Kickstarter has launched! Spread the word to show that WE ARE MANY! #bikesvscars

We hope to be the documentary campaign on Kickstarter with the most supporters ever. Within the first 3 hours, we've already had donations come in from Sweden, Denmark, China, India, Canada and the United States. Let's keep the momentum going tonight! What better way to celebrate World Car Free Day?

Sending our best from Sweden,
Fredrik, Margarete, Elin, Agnes, Glynnis, Anton and Lina at WG Film

World Car Free Day - Coming to a city near you!

World Car Free Day is fast approaching, but you still have plenty of time to plan your auto-free Sunday. Will you take your bike out for a ride, hop on a public bus, tram or train, or take a nice stroll through town?

A 2012 study found that in America alone, if drivers replaced just one 4-mile (~6.5km) car trip with a bike each week for the entire year, it would save more than two billion gallons (~7.6 billion liters) of gas.

Why not replace one of those 4-mile car trips on World Car Free Day? While the official date is September 22nd, many cities will be holding their car-free days on the 20th and 21st. If you’re looking for a local event near you, here are some cities that will be (officially) participating:

Montreal, 20th
Long Island, New York, 20th
Columbus, Ohio
, 20th
Edmonton, Canada, 21st
Brussels, 22nd
Bangladesh, 22nd
Los Angeles, 22nd
Washington DC, 20th-22nd

Know of any more cities taking part that weekend? Messagetweet or facebook us information on the events so that we can add them to the list. And remember, anyone can participate in World Car Free Day. Leaving your car at home does not require an event, just a bike, bus or pair of shoes!

6 days until World Car Free Day

Imagine just one day with no cars on the streets. 24 hours with no traffic, no honking horns, road after road completely free to bicyclists and pedestrians. On September 22nd, people around the world will gather for World Car Free Day to show just what that could look like.

The World Car Free Day aims to promote improvement of mass transit, cycling and walking. It’s all about creating viable options for getting around in our cities. The creative idea was announced by Eric Britton in 1994 at a conference in Toledo, Spain. This very special day sets out a challenge for a city, neighborhood or group:

  • To spend one carefully prepared day without cars.

  • To study and observe closely what exactly goes on during that day.

  • Then, to reflect publicly and collectively on the lessons of this experience and on what might be prudently and creatively done next to build on these.

Welcome to BIKES vs CARS

Welcome to the website for BIKES vs CARS, Fredrik Gertten’s new film project.

This morning, Fredrik opened up the 2013 Malmö Filmdagar with a Work In Progress introduction of the film, where the audience got a first look at BIKES vs CARS.

Now, we want all of you to see what we’ve been working on. Both the film and the website are still in development, but we hope you'll take a look at what we have so far. We’ll continue adding more to the site in the upcoming days, so make sure to keep checking back.

We hope to have BIKES vs CARS completed in early 2014. For now, sign up to get updates on the progress of the film and make sure to follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. Help spread the word that WE ARE MANY.
